At Van Mall, the last week of September is set aside to celebrate Active Aging Week. A global movement meant to inspire wellness in seniors and debunk stereotypes about aging, Active Aging Week is fun and competitive. Learn more about how Van Mall marked this important week encouraging health and wellness in residents while having fun!

Active Aging Week: A Global Movement

Weight Lifting at Van MallIn 2003 the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) named the last week of September Active Aging Week. It’s a weeklong campaign that “calls attention to and wholeheartedly celebrates the positivity of aging today.” By showcasing the abilities of seniors and caregivers, the week highlights role models and strives to eliminate stereotypes surrounding aging. The week shows that seniors over 50 can live active, full lives and gives seniors an opportunity to experience exercise activities in a safe and supportive environment.

Since its inception, the movement has gone global with participating countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and Ireland. Over 3,000 organizations host events to promote Active Aging Week. These organizations include senior community centers, senior living communities, medical facilities, wellness centers, libraries, universities, and governments.

Inspiring Wellness at Van Mall

Van Mall is a proud partner of Active Aging Week and every fall we plan a full week of fun and physical activities that bring out the best in residents and staff.

“One of the highlights of the week was the intergenerational beanbag baseball game. The residents pulled out their competitive edge against the sea ff. It was great to have th estaff and residents connect over something fun.” – Jeanette Caples, PrimeFit Personal Trainer

Group Fitness at Van Mall

With a focus on health, exercise, and overall wellness, this year we hosted fun activities to encourage movement. We walked along the Columbia River, swam a local pool, played balloon volleyball, beanbag exercise, jeopardy, and other games.

“It’s great fun for your health and stability. I like physical activities. It was a lot of fun.” – Ken Draper, Resident
