We know that Van Mall is a special place and we know it’s our residents that make it so special. Each and every resident has a unique life story that is acknowledged and celebrated. We were thrilled to learn that the local Portland community would be joining us in honoring one of our very own World War II veterans at a Trail Blazers basketball game. Learn more about our trip to the game and how we celebrate every day at Van Mall.

Residents and staff at Van mall were thrilled to honor our very own Harold McCarty as the Hometown Hero at a Portland Trail Blazers basketball game. Sarah Kussin, Partnership Marketing Specialist for the Portland Trail Blazers reached out to our program supervisor to let us know that Harold had been selected.

Harold is a centenarian who has lived all over the Evergreen State, building a beautiful life. He was based in Grottaglie Field near Taranto, Italy in World War II. Harold flew 50 missions for the 449th Bomb Group “Flying Horsemen” of the 15th Air Force. Harold is also a talented painter and a good friend. When our residents found out he would be honored, the sign-up sheet filled up fast as residents wanted to share their special moment with their friends.

At the end of the first quarter, the Blazers played a short video sharing Harold’s accomplishment and then the spotlight turned to Harold and his friends in the stand. The arena filled with cheers and applause as over 18,000 spectators gave Harold a standing ovation.

At Van Mall, we are thankful for the service and sacrifice of our veterans, many of whom are also our residents. We have fun celebrating together and would love for you to join us! Contact us today, we can’t wait to celebrate your story!
