This has been the best decision - having my family move into The Ackerly!
It was an eye-opener for my wife and me!
Everyone was friendly and helpful. I am still 1 1/2 to 2 years away from moving into a facility of this type and am just exploring my options at this time. I appreciate the time and information that all people that I spoke to shared. Thank you very much.

Sherwood Memory Care Q&A

Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia are progressive diseases that worsen over time. The Ackerly at Sherwood provides a variety of level of memory care ranging from early stages to later stages of the disease.

The decision to move to memory care is incredibly personal and individual. Some choose to move in following a dementia diagnosis, while others wait until the care becomes too burdensome for family. Other signs that it’s time to move to an assisted living community or memory care community include neglecting household chores, letting bills pile up, needing assistance with activities of daily living, and being concerned about the safety of your loved one.

Similar to assisted living facilities, Memory care communities offer assisted living services to help residents with activities of daily living which include grooming, dressing, continence management, and more. Memory care residents also receive services related to cognitive impairment and have unique programming available to meet their needs.

There are several senior living communities and memory care facilities around Sherwood and in the greater Portland area. At The Ackerly at Sherwood, residents are able to age in place, often moving into independent living before any care is needed and then sometimes progressing through assisted living and memory care as needs change over time.

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover costs associated with memory care. Medicare does not provide benefits for personal care or supervision in a memory care residence or an assisted living facility.

A memory care community, also known as a memory care facility, is a senior living community environment where seniors who have Alzheimer’s disease or a related form of dementia can live. Memory care facilities offer care services, programs specifically designed to engage people with dementia, dementia-friendly meal plans, and secured outdoor spaces to prevent wandering.

Yes, according to the Social Security Administration, Alzheimer’s disease, including younger/early onset Alzheimer’s, is a disability and gives those with the disease access to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
